What technical analysis can and cannot do<\/h2><p>Technical analysis studies price, volume and market structure. It can help organize information, define risk and identify where buyers or sellers previously became active. It cannot guarantee what price will do next. A chart level is useful because it creates a testable scenario, not because it is magical.<\/p><p>The best way to use chart analysis is probabilistically: \u201cif price holds above this area, my bullish case remains intact; if it breaks and closes below, the setup is invalid.\u201d That is more disciplined than predicting exact targets with certainty.<\/p><h2>2. Trend<\/h2><p>An uptrend is generally characterized by higher highs and higher lows. A downtrend tends to produce lower highs and lower lows. A range produces repeated movement between boundaries without sustained directional progress.<\/p><p>Trend depends on timeframe. Bitcoin can be in a daily uptrend while pulling back on the hourly chart. Always define the timeframe before making a statement such as \u201cthe trend is bullish.\u201d<\/p><h2>3. Swing highs and lows<\/h2><p>A swing high is a local peak where price turns lower. A swing low is a local trough where price turns higher. Volume<\/h2><p>Volume shows trading activity. A breakout on expanding volume may suggest stronger participation than one occurring on thin activity. However, volume data can differ across exchanges, so use a consistent and reputable source.<\/p><p>Volume should confirm structure, not replace it. High volume during a sharp sell-off may reflect panic capitulation, continued distribution or both depending on what follows.<\/p><h2>9. Moving averages<\/h2><p>Moving averages smooth price data. A 50-day moving average reflects the average closing price over approximately 50 sessions, while a 200-day average responds more slowly. Traders use them for trend context, dynamic support\/resistance and regime filters.<\/p><p>A moving average is not a wall. Price can cross it repeatedly in a range. Its usefulness rises when it aligns with other evidence and the market is actually trending.<\/p><h2>10. Trendlines<\/h2><p>A trendline connects rising lows or falling highs. It can help visualize the slope of a move. The more aggressively a line must be redrawn to fit the latest price, the less objective it becomes.<\/p><p>Trendlines should support your reading of market structure rather than dictate it. Horizontal levels often matter more because more participants see the same price zones.<\/p><h2>11. Ranges<\/h2><p>Ranges form when price rotates between support and resistance. Traders may buy near the lower boundary and sell near the upper boundary until the range breaks.
