MIN COURSE

Crypto Scams: Rug Pulls, Phishing and Honeypots

Course goal: learn how common crypto scams work, why wallet users are attractive targets, how to recognize red flags before signing or sending, and what to do if you think a wallet or account has been compromised.

1. Why crypto scams are effective

Crypto combines irreversible transactions, global markets, self-custody and fast-moving narratives. Those features create genuine innovation, but they also create an environment where social engineering can be extremely profitable. Attackers often do not need to defeat blockchain cryptography. They need a user to sign the wrong message, reveal a recovery phrase or send assets voluntarily.

Scams are therefore best understood as attacks on decision-making. They exploit urgency, authority, fear, greed and confusion. The defensive skill is not memorizing every scam name; it is learning a repeatable verification process.

2. Phishing

Phishing imitates a trusted website, wallet, exchange or person. A fake page may copy branding perfectly and ask the user to connect a wallet, approve a transaction, enter login credentials or reveal a seed phrase.

Common delivery methods include search advertisements, social-media replies, fake support accounts, direct messages, sponsored posts and emails. A domain may differ from the legitimate site by only one character.

3. Seed-phrase scams

No legitimate decentralized application needs your seed phrase to connect a wallet. Wallet support teams do not need it to “verify” or “synchronize” your account. Anyone asking for the phrase should be treated as an attacker unless you are deliberately restoring your wallet in trusted software that you initiated yourself.

Once a recovery phrase is exposed, assume the wallet is compromised. Moving assets to a newly generated wallet is normally more important than changing a local password.

4. Fake support

Scammers monitor public complaints. If a user posts “my wallet transaction is stuck,” fake support accounts may immediately reply. They often direct the victim to a private message and then to a malicious site.

Use support links from the official application or company website. Never trust an unsolicited account simply because it has a logo, many followers or a convincing username.

5. Rug pulls

A rug pull occurs when project insiders or token creators extract value and leave other participants with severe losses. This can happen by removing liquidity, selling a concentrated token allocation, exploiting hidden contract permissions or abandoning a project after raising funds.

Not every failed project is a rug pull. Teams can make bad decisions without intending fraud. The important analytical question is whether insiders had the power and incentive to exit at users’ expense.

6. Liquidity removal

In some token launches, developers provide most of the DEX liquidity. If liquidity tokens or positions are not locked or otherwise constrained, the team may be able to withdraw the paired assets, leaving holders with tokens that cannot be sold efficiently.

A “locked liquidity” badge is not a complete safety guarantee. Check how much liquidity is locked, for how long, who controls other pools and whether the token contract itself has dangerous permissions.

7. Honeypot tokens

A honeypot token allows users to buy but makes selling impossible or extremely expensive. The contract may block transfers from ordinary users, charge a near-100% sell tax or whitelist insider addresses.

A chart that rises vertically with almost no meaningful selling can be a warning sign. Before buying an unfamiliar token, check whether normal users have successfully sold it and whether transfer restrictions can be changed by an owner.

8. Hidden taxes and owner privileges

Some tokens allow administrators to change transaction fees, mint new supply, blacklist addresses or pause transfers. These functions can have legitimate purposes, but they can also be abused.

Contract-scanning tools can flag common privileges, but no automated tool can certify safety. Review ownership structure and whether privileged functions are protected by multisig, time locks or governance.

9. Fake airdrops

Scammers send worthless tokens or NFTs to wallets and include links inviting users to claim rewards. Interacting with the site can lead to malicious approvals or signatures.

Receiving an unsolicited token does not mean your wallet is already hacked. Often the safest response is simply not to interact with it.

10. Approval phishing

A malicious site may ask for token approval rather than a direct transfer. The request can look routine because DeFi users often approve contracts. If signed, the attacker may gain permission to move tokens later.

Read wallet prompts carefully. Use allowance-checking tools to review and revoke approvals you no longer need. Keep high-value long-term holdings in a wallet that is not regularly connected to experimental applications.

11. Blind signing

Some wallet prompts show data in a form that is difficult to interpret. Signing an opaque message can authorize more than the user realizes. Hardware wallets protect keys from extraction but cannot protect a user who intentionally approves a malicious instruction.

Prefer wallets and applications that provide transaction simulation and human-readable signing details.

12. Address poisoning

Attackers can send tiny transactions from addresses designed to resemble addresses you have used before. The goal is to contaminate your transaction history so you later copy the attacker’s address by mistake.

Never copy a destination solely from recent transaction history. Verify the full address through a trusted source for significant transfers.

13. Clipboard malware

Malware can monitor copied crypto addresses and replace them with an attacker’s address. Users who check only the first or last few characters may miss the substitution.

For large transactions, verify the destination on a trusted device or hardware-wallet screen and use a small test transfer first.

14. Fake investment platforms

Some scams show victims a fabricated account balance and fake profits. The victim may be encouraged to deposit more money, then told to pay a “tax,” “unlock fee” or “verification payment” before withdrawals can occur.

A legitimate investment platform should not require endless extra deposits to release your own funds. Be especially cautious when a stranger from social media or a dating platform introduces the investment opportunity.

15. Impersonation and giveaway scams

Attackers impersonate public figures, exchanges or projects and promise to send back more crypto if users first send a payment. This is a classic scam pattern. Legitimate organizations do not ask users to send coins to receive double in return.

16. Pump-and-dump groups

Private groups may coordinate buying of thin tokens and encourage newcomers to chase the move. Organizers can buy first, promote the token and sell into later demand. Even if the scheme is not technically a smart-contract scam, the market structure is designed to transfer losses to late participants.

17. Fake presales

Presales can be legitimate fundraising mechanisms, but they are easy to fake. Red flags include anonymous teams, unverifiable partnerships, aggressive guaranteed-return language, vague token utility and payment addresses that cannot be independently tied to the project.

18. Deepfakes and AI scams

AI-generated video and audio can imitate executives or public figures. Treat a video endorsement as a marketing claim that requires independent verification. Check official channels and avoid acting on a single clip, livestream or private message.

19. Social engineering red flags

Urgency: “act in the next 10 minutes.”

Secrecy: “do not tell your bank or family.”

Authority: “I am official support.”

Guaranteed returns or risk-free profit.

Requests for a recovery phrase or private key.

Unexpected wallet-connection links.

Requests to pay a fee before a withdrawal can be released.

Pressure to disable security features.

20. A verification routine

Stop before signing or sending.

Open the service from a saved bookmark or independently typed official URL.

Verify the domain and contract address.

Check whether the same announcement appears on multiple official channels.

Read the wallet request.

Use a separate wallet for unfamiliar applications.

Start with a small amount when testing legitimate services.

21. If your wallet may be compromised

Disconnecting a website does not revoke token approvals and does not repair an exposed seed phrase. If only a suspicious approval was signed, review and revoke permissions quickly. If the recovery phrase or private key was exposed, create a new wallet with a new seed on a trusted device and move remaining assets where possible.

Be careful: scammers target victims again by offering “recovery services.” Blockchain transactions are often irreversible, and anyone promising guaranteed recovery for an upfront payment may be running a second scam.

22. If an exchange account is compromised

Use the exchange’s official security process, change the password from a clean device, revoke active sessions, reset API keys and contact support through official channels. If your email account was also compromised, secure it first because it may control password resets.

23. Documenting an incident

Save transaction hashes, wallet addresses, timestamps, messages and screenshots. Report relevant addresses to exchanges or law-enforcement channels where appropriate. Good records can improve the chance that centralized services identify stolen funds later, even though recovery is never guaranteed.

24. Knowledge check

Why does a hardware wallet not stop every scam?

What is a honeypot token?

Why does disconnecting a wallet from a website not necessarily remove risk?

What is address poisoning?

What should you assume after exposing a seed phrase?

Answers: hardware wallets still sign user-approved instructions; a honeypot restricts selling or transfers; approvals can remain active on-chain; poisoning inserts lookalike addresses into history; an exposed seed should be treated as compromised.

25. Practical exercise

Create a “before I sign” checklist and save it somewhere accessible. Include domain verification, contract verification, approval amount, destination address and whether the action is expected. Then review your current wallet approvals using a reputable approval-management tool for the network you use. Do not revoke blindly if you do not understand the transaction; the exercise is to learn what permissions exist.

26. Key takeaways

The strongest scam defense is a process. Slow down, verify independently, isolate risky activity and treat recovery phrases as master keys. Most crypto scams exploit trust and urgency rather than breaking the blockchain itself.

Next lesson: RSI, Moving Averages and Momentum Indicators Explained →

Educational content only.
