Aave describes health factor as a measure of a borrow position’s collateral buffer. A value below one makes a position eligible for liquidation under its protocol rules. A positive buffer at entry can shrink if collateral falls, debt grows or risk parameters change.
What the evidence shows
A DeFi loan can be healthy at opening and unsafe later. Aave’s health factor combines collateral values, liquidation thresholds and debt. Asset prices, interest and governance-set parameters can change the buffer. The exact market and chain matter because risk settings differ.
If collateral drops or the debt asset rises relative to collateral, liquidation eligibility can arrive quickly. Additional collateral can improve the position, but transactions can fail or be delayed. A dashboard value is a current estimate dependent on oracle updates and is not an insurance policy.
Why it matters
Depositing more collateral or reducing debt may improve a position, but each action has transaction fees and execution risk. A protocol interface can show a current reading; it is not a guarantee against a sudden move or oracle delay.
Deeper context and limits
Aave’s health factor is not a universal score for all DeFi loans; it reflects its own parameters and current oracle values. A borrower may have several collateral assets with different liquidation thresholds. Changes in collateral correlation can make a portfolio seem diversified while its assets fall together during stress.
Before borrowing, simulate more than a small price decline. Include a collateral drawdown, rising debt cost and network congestion that delays a rescue transaction. Check whether there is enough liquidity to repay or swap at a reasonable price. Monitoring tools can warn, but only completed on-chain transactions change a position. A conservative buffer is a decision, not a fixed number that fits every asset.
Bull, bear and neutral cases
Bull case
A conservatively collateralized loan can tolerate more volatility and leave room to adjust.
Bear case
High leverage, correlated collateral and thin liquidity can accelerate losses during a gap.
Neutral case
Borrowing may be unnecessary if the expected benefit is too small for the liquidation risk.
Confirmation and invalidation
Model a stress scenario and monitor the actual on-chain position. Invalidate a safety claim that assumes prices or interest stay fixed.
Review the specific market and asset parameters before borrowing, keep a margin above the threshold, and avoid relying on a single notification. Check the actual transaction after any adjustment.
Reader checklist
- Verify the contract and market parameters.
- Maintain a deliberate buffer above one.
- Know how to repay or add collateral before stress.
