Coinbase Q3 Net Income Reaches $719M as Crypto Holdings Gains Mask Softer Core Profit

Coinbase reported $718.7 million of GAAP net income, but its own reconciliation shows a $715 million gain on investment crypto assets. Adjusted net income was $77.7 million as subscriptions, USDC balances and prediction markets expanded.

Coinbase Global reported third-quarter 2026 GAAP net income of $718.7 million, but the headline result needs qualification. The company’s 29 October earnings release reconciles that figure to adjusted net income of $77.7 million after excluding a $715 million gain on crypto assets held for investment and other investment effects.

Adjusted EBITDA was $332.9 million, up from $207.8 million in the second quarter but well below the $800.7 million Coinbase reported for the same measure a year earlier. The company described the quarter as profitable despite a softer crypto market, while emphasizing growth outside conventional spot trading.

Crypto gains drove most of the GAAP profit gap

The difference between GAAP and adjusted profit is central to interpreting the quarter. Coinbase’s reconciliation removes gains and losses on investment crypto assets because management treats them as long-term holdings rather than core revenue-generating operations. That accounting choice does not make the gain unreal, but it means the $718.7 million headline should not be read as a direct measure of recurring exchange profitability.

The company also excluded a $39.2 million gain on investments and applied a $113.3 million tax effect in reaching adjusted net income. Investors comparing quarters therefore need to separate market-driven revaluation from transaction, subscription and services activity.

USDC and subscriptions became a larger part of the mix

Coinbase said subscription and services revenue represented 49% of net revenue in the quarter. Average USDC held in Coinbase products reached $22 billion, which the company described as roughly 30% of average USDC market capitalization and 49% higher than a year earlier.

That balance matters because Coinbase participates economically in USDC activity through its relationship with Circle, but the release’s statement that it captured about half of all USDC economics is a company metric rather than an independently audited market-share measure in this report. Changes in interest rates, USDC balances and commercial arrangements can all affect the durability of that revenue stream.

Paid Coinbase One subscribers also reached a record, rising 24% year over year. Coinbase said those customers produced higher balances, revenue per user and retention than other users. The figures point to deeper engagement, although the release did not disclose the absolute subscriber count in the headline materials reviewed by NetNapz.

Prediction markets and derivatives broaden the exchange model

Coinbase said prediction markets surpassed $200 million in annualized revenue, with daily traders up more than 60% quarter over quarter. Annualized revenue is a run-rate calculation, not revenue already earned over a full year, and it can change quickly with event calendars, regulation and user activity.

The company reported crypto trading-volume market share of 10.7% and said assets on platform represented 12.5% of total crypto market capitalization. It also reported 179% compound annual growth in derivatives trading volume over two years. These market-share and industry-ranking statements come from Coinbase’s own release, which says some data were obtained from third parties and not independently verified by the company.

Coinbase further said tokenized-stock volume on Base had exceeded $1 billion since launch. Tokenized equity exposure does not itself grant holders direct ownership of the underlying company shares; legal rights, redemption terms, issuer controls and trading hours depend on the specific product.

NetNapz assessment

What improved: adjusted EBITDA rose sequentially, subscription and services represented nearly half of net revenue, average USDC balances expanded, and newer products such as prediction markets and lending gained traction. That mix can reduce dependence on spot-trading fees.

What remains volatile: GAAP earnings were heavily influenced by crypto-asset gains. Stablecoin economics remain sensitive to balances and interest rates, while prediction-market run rates can be seasonal and regulation-dependent. Company-reported market-share figures also require external confirmation before being treated as settled industry facts.

What to watch: the next filing should clarify whether adjusted profitability, subscription revenue and USDC balances remain durable if crypto prices or trading activity weaken. Investors should also track regulatory treatment of prediction markets, derivatives growth, lending-book credit performance and the relationship between Base activity and revenue recognized by Coinbase.

Event and publication dates: Coinbase published results on 29 October 2026 for the quarter ended 30 September 2026. NetNapz checked the release on 31 October 2026. This report separates company disclosures from NetNapz assessment and does not treat non-GAAP measures or annualized run rates as audited GAAP revenue.
