Kalshi and BitGo Launch Bitcoin-Backed Loans for Futures Margin

Eligible Kalshi Prime clients can borrow dollars against crypto held with BitGo to fund futures margin. The arrangement adds borrowing obligations alongside trading risk.

Kalshi Prime and BitGo announced HODL Margining on 22 October, following reporting on the arrangement a day earlier. Their joint Business Wire release describes loans for eligible clients secured by bitcoin, ether or eligible stablecoins.

Who lends, who holds the collateral

Kalshi Katalyst, an affiliate of Kalshi Prime, supplies dollar loans. Proceeds go directly into the borrower’s Prime account to meet margin obligations for perpetual futures and other eligible products on KalshiEX. BitGo Bank & Trust holds the pledged crypto in segregated custody, subject to the lender’s security interest.

This structure lets a customer retain ownership while pledging assets. It does not remove the possibility of collateral liquidation. The announcement distinguishes the regulated futures broker from Katalyst and its loans, which it says are not regulated by the CFTC or NFA.

Two sources of leverage

The release warns that loan principal, interest and fees remain payable regardless of trading results, and pledged crypto can be liquidated. It does not publish a universal interest rate, loan-to-value ratio or customer-specific collateral threshold. Availability is restricted to eligible customers.

Kalshi’s margin guide explains a separate mechanism: positions require initial and maintenance margin, and adverse moves can trigger liquidation. Higher leverage puts the liquidation level closer to the entry price. Its safeguards do not prevent losses from exceeding posted margin in exceptional conditions.

NetNapz assessment

Assessment: the important change is how traders finance margin. A customer can keep exposure to pledged bitcoin while adding a debt-funded futures position. That can increase sensitivity to the same market shock: falling collateral value and a losing trade may arrive together. Readers need the actual borrowing agreement and position-level requirements to evaluate that combined exposure.

The launch does not establish fresh purchases of bitcoin, realised customer demand or a guaranteed market-price effect. Custody, credit and futures risk remain separate parts of the arrangement.
